Well Drilling & New Pump Installation
Water well drilling is the process of accessing groundwater in underground aquifers. This specialized operation involves several key steps and equipment:

-
Permitting and Preparation: The customer obtains legal permit, which includes the well location, and prepares the site for the drilling rig and support equipment.
-
Drilling: A drill rig—an air rotary tool—is used to bore into the earth. The depth depends on the water table's location and local geology. The average for our area is 300 feet.
-
Casing and Grouting: Once the desired depth is reached, a casing (PVC or steel) is inserted to prevent the well from collapsing and to protect the water from contamination. Grout is applied around the casing to seal it.
-
Well Development and Testing: The well is flushed and tested to ensure it produces clean water at a sustainable rate.
-
Pump Installation: We install a pump system in the well to bring water to the surface.
-
Final Inspection: The well is inspected for safety and efficiency.

Well Abandonment
Well abandonment is the process of safely and permanently closing a well that is no longer in use or has become a potential hazard. The goal is to prevent contamination of groundwater, eliminate safety risks, and comply with environmental regulations.
Here’s how it typically works:

-
Assessment: Your local health department will require abandonment based on the well's condition or location, such as proximity to a septic system or property setbacks.
-
Cleaning and Removal: Any pumps, piping, or obstructions are removed from the well.
-
Sealing: The well is filled with an impermeable material—typically bentonite clay, neat cement, or concrete—to block any pathways for water or contaminants.
-
Documentation: A formal record of the abandonment is submitted to the appropriate agency, such as the Division of Water Quality in North Carolina.
A well is also considered abandoned if it’s in such disrepair that it can’t be used safely or effectively. Proper abandonment is crucial because an unused or damaged well can act as a direct conduit for pollutants to enter underground water sources.
